Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF party says it is planning to raise no less than $1m for the veteran leader's birthday bash set for later this month.
According to New Zimbabwe.com, the ruling party's youth secretary for finance, Tongai Kasukuwere said the party had already sourced more than half of the money and "companies and individuals are promising to contribute".
Zimbabwe has one of the weakest economies in the world, but this has never stopped its nonagenarian leader from hosting lavish birthday parties year after year, the report said
The country's state-owned newspaper, the Chronicle, said this week that wild animals, including elephants, were set to be slaughtered for Mugabe’s party, after a donation from a prominent farmer.
The farmer, Tendai Musasa, pledged to donate two elephants, two buffalos, two sables, five impalas and a lion worth a combined $120 000.
According to The Guardian, conservationists branded the Musasa's pledge as unethical.
But Musasa maintained the donation was "a perfect gesture", adding that the animals would be slaughtered a few days ahead of the big day with the meat being stored by a local hotel.
Mugabe turns 91 on 21 February but the birthday bash will be held on 28 February in the resort town of Victoria Falls.
At least 20 000 people are expected to attend.
