Heaps of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have been discovered in a refuse site at Enugu East Local Government secretariat, Nkwo Nike, a suburb of Enugu metropolis.
Some Nigerians, who saw the cards all around the council secretariat, raised the alarm.
According to PUNCH visiting the secretariat, the cards were seen all over thea site, fuelling the speculation that some politicians may have been disappointed that the use of card readers for the general elections may render the cards useless to them.
It was, however, discovered that the cards did not share similar features with the ones currently being distributed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
When our correspondent contacted the Enugu State Police Command spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu, over the development, he said the police cannot move in unless the INEC invites them.
When contacted on phone, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Professor Chukwuemeka Onukaogu, said he was away in Aba, Abia State, but would send somebody to investigate.
However, when our correspondent informed him that the cards littering the site did not share the same features with the ones currently being issued by INEC, he said the cards could be the ones produced by former INEC Chairman, Maurice Iwu, sin 2003, which most Nigerians did not collect.
The insistence of the Chairman of INEC, Professor Atahiru Jega, on using the card reader to accredit voters for the forthcoming elections has received support from politicians across the political parties.
