Some suspected robbers have dug a 10-metre long tunnel into a branch of the United Bank for Africa Plc on Ado-Owo Road, Akure, Ondo State, through which they allegedly planned to enter the bank without being caught.
It was gathered that the hoodlums started digging the hole from the back of the bank and had almost got through to inside the banking hall before the police discovered the place.
According to the state Police Commissioner, Mike Ogbodu, who explained that the police uncovered the robbers’ plan a few days ago, adding that the hoodlums dug the tunnel from the area where nobody took notice of them.
He said, “The robbers had planned to attack the bank by passing through the tunnel. But it was discovered by men of the state command on surveillance. The police have put in place adequate measure to foil any robbery.
“Some of the items recovered from the scene are diggers, cutlasses, hoes and shovels.”
The police boss assured banks in the state of adequate security, while advising managements of the banks to be vigilant.
