The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Solomon Arase, yesterday, said the inability and unwillingness of government to adequately fund the Police was responsible for persistent corruption in the Force.
Arase, who made this disclosure at a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs, in Abuja, said it was difficult to get policemen to stop corrupt practices in the face of poor and unattractive welfare package.
Arase said over the years the police made serious efforts to solve the problem of personnel welfare, but this has been made difficult by the lean envelop it was receiving in its budgetary requests.
For instance, the IGP said in 2010, the police asked for over N45bn in the overhead budget, but was given a paltry N15bn that was hardly able to take care of stationery.
Equally, he said in the same year, the police asked for over N53bn under capital budget, but was given about N39bn.
Arase told the committee that police operatives were working under very difficult and frustrating condition, living in dilapidated houses and working in offices not befitting of their roles as police officers.
He said the police needed to recruit additional numbers to boost its staff strength to be able to provide security coverage across the country.
