Police Interrupt Gay Wedding Arrests Couple In Abuja

Police in Federal Capital Territory Abuja interrupted a gay wedding between two men on Saturday,
The Wedding was between Ibrahim Lawal (Husband) and Umar Tahir (Wife), which took place at a hotel in King’s Land, in the Jiwa Community of the FCT.

The Spokesman of the FCT Police Command  Anjuguri Manzah, said the wedding was disrupted because of the law,he said “We acted based on the provisions of the Same-Sex Prohibition Act signed into law in 2013.”
“We acted fast, following a tip-off, by moving to the venue of the event to stop it.
“The names of the couple are Ibrahim Lawal (husband) and Umar Tahir (wife), and both men are from Kaduna State.
“The police is investigating the case and would charge the couple and other persons involved in the ceremony to court
“We also arrested the sponsors of the wedding and the owner of the hotel where the event was billed to hold,”  He added.
 Same-sex marriage is outlawed in Nigeria, in 2013, ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan signed into law the Same-Sex Prohibition Act.
The Act read in part, “A marriage contract or civil union entered into between persons of same sex: (a) is prohibited in Nigeria; and (b) shall not be recognised as entitled to the benefits of a valid marriage.
“A person who enters into a same sex marriage contract or civil union commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of 14 years imprisonment.”
