The Chief of Naval Staff,Vice Admiral,Ibok-Ete Abas said the Navy has paid N1bn in fines  over a period of four years for the misconduct of some Naval Officials who maltreated some civilians.
He said this in Calabar over the weekend while addressing the naval rating on the need for proper behaviour with member of the public.

Ibas said, “The money I quoted was not a fine that was given to the Navy from one particular case but, cumulatively, in the last four years, the Navy has spent over N1 billion as fine for various cases.I am calling the attention of everybody that we need to relate well with the civilian populace. We are supposed to be protecting civilians and not to harass or molest them.“The Navy, under me, would not condone any act of barbarism. If you misuse the weapon we give you, we will try you and dismiss you.”
He advise the rating to report any misconduct to the appropriate authority.
