
Seven people was injured when Markaiveh hotel on Refinery road Effurun Warri, collapsed yesterday, among the injured is a woman police and an Aide to the Wife of a Northern Governor,the collapsed of the hotel was similar to the Synagogue of All Nation in lagos in 2014.
The victims were people who came from other states looking for Miracles at Christ Mercy Land Church, headed by pastor Jeremiah Fufeyin called the TB Joshua of Ijaw.
Though the cause of the hotel building collapsed is yet to be known ,but the deputy Governor of Delta State Mr Otuaro who visited the scene, said it is likely to be a structural defect.he immediately orders the closure of the entire wing of the hotel which is a 2 storey building,
“The state government has ordered that the hotel be closed immediately to avert further loss of life. We are going to send engineers straight away,“It is possible that there had been some structural defects during construction, because that place seems to be a waterlogged area and, maybe, the proper engineering works were not done.” Otuaro said.
Addressing Reporter at the Grace clinic where 5 of the victims including two brothers and three other men were been treated regretted the trauma the victims faced including a Bayelsa state woman who spent 7 hours before she was rescued.
It was learnt that the victims of the Collapsed are pilgrims from other states including a northern Governors Wife'Aide identified as Adeza from Agbede Edo state who told Otuaro she came to search for a spiritual solution to family problems
“I am a Muslim, but I came here to see the man of God. Recently, I lost my elder brother, who was in the Army. So many things have been happening in my family. So, I came here for prayers.”she said
She said she heard people voice under the rubble when she was rescued that people might still be underneath but the management said all 7 lodgers has been rescued at 11 am.
Another victim Evangelist Florence from Bayelsa said she came for the church programme.
“Immediately I got into town, I went to the mountain for prayers. It was after the prayer that I came to the hotel.“As I was sleeping at 2am, I heard a sound like krakrakra (creaking sound) and everything came down. I tried to unlock my door but I couldn’t; it seemed like the door was locked from outside. I was under the ground till about 7am when I was rescue. she said.
A nearby land lord Akpoguma davis said “At 3am my dogs were barking seriously. So, I came out, not knowing they were reacting to the noisy cracks from the first vibration,“I took a torchlight and went round, wondering if there were robbers lurking. After three minutes, this whole wing of the building collapsed.“About seven persons have been rescued alive. I heard one woman shouting: ‘I am Mercy; help me.’ We got her out after four hours.”
Another neighbour Ameye said: “More persons could still be in there. A man on the other side has been in contact on his phone. The phone probably ran out on battery because we have not been hearing from him anymore. The line has gone dead.”
One of the rescued victims, Benjamin Hosu, said he arrived in Warri from Lagos on Tuesday.
“A colleague and I came to town to execute a project yesterday. We were lodged on the first floor. Around 3.10am, we heard a noise and thought they were robbers.“Suddenly, our room went down to the floor. Some rescuers came out with torchlights as we shouted for help. They started breaking in till they got us out. We have been to the hospital, checked and confirmed okay.” he said
