A total of 240 members of the Boko Haram have surrendered to the Multinational Joint Task in Chad.
The Chief Military Public Relations Officer of the MNJTF, Col. Muhammad Dole, said in a statement on Tuesday that some of the insurgents surrendered to the men of the task force with their weapons.
He said that a total of 464 Boko Haram members have so far surrendered to the troops of the MNJTF
Dole said that the concerted efforts of the ground troops of the MNJTF and the joint air operation carried out during the ‘Operation Gama Aiki’ launched by the Nigerian Air Force culminated in the surrender of the insurgents.
He said that the terrorists could no longer remain in their hideouts because of the sustained offensive and blockade of their logistics supply routes by troops
He said that the heightened military operations compelled the Boko Haram insurgents and the members of their families to surrender to the troops of Sector II Area of Responsibility, Bagasola, Chad.
He said that the insurgents, who were addressed by the Commander MNJTF, Major-General Lamidi Adeosun, during a visit to the area, were being profiled
Dole quoted Adeosun as commending the insurgents for taking the bold decision to abandon terrorism.
Adeosun was also said to have urged the insurgents to prevail on their colleagues to emulate their steps by abandoning terrorism.
The statement added the MNJTF commander donated some money to buy two cows and 10 bags of assorted foodstuffs for the feeding of the Boko Haram suspects and the members of their families.
“The recent wave of surrender took place in Sector II Area of Responsibility, Bagasola, Chad.
“A total of 240 Boko Haram insurgents surrendered, some of them with arms and ammunition. They are being profiled and camped in Bagasola. During his operational visit to Sector 2 AOR, the Commander, MNJTF, Major-General Lamidi Adeosun, addressed the ex -insurgents and their families.”
“The commander commended the leaders of the ex-insurgents for their courage and for taking the right decision to abandoned terrorism and insurgency.”
