Two powerful earthquakes shook central Italy wednesday night, pulverising buildings, knocking out power and sparking panic.
The first tremor measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale came at 7.10pm local time last night and shook buildings as far away as the capital, Rome, 80 miles away from the epicentre near Perugia.
Two hours later a strong aftershock destroyed buildings already weakened by the earlier tremor.
Some buildings have collapsed, a motorway has been closed and many people in the countryside were plunged into darkness as the power was knocked out. Rescuers were also hampered by heavy rain and darkness.
But the head of Italy's civil protection agency, Fabrizio Curcio, said so far they had only heard of one fatality - a 73-year-old man who died of a heart attack.
