CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ANOINTING.-LESSON 5

INTRODUCTION: Anointing is the power of God
directly to the mortal man thereby changing the individual and drastically altering the way in which he/she relates to the world and other humanity. It mediates and smoothens the interface between the absolute holiness of Deity and the frailness of humanity. It provides remedy for commonness of life, the relief of irritation, enhancement of beauty and glory. Characteristics are the features that help us to distinguish the true substance from the fake. They help to tell apart, identify and describe recognizably one thing from another. These are the disguising marks, traits, qualities, or attributes of a thing. Only the spiritual man can discern the characteristics of true anointing because, anointing is a spiritual matter. The characteristics which are as spiritual as the anointing itself can only be discerned spiritually apart.
TRAITS OF FAKE ANOINTING
1. It speaks lies in hypocrisy - 1Tim. 4:2
2. Has ability to seduce and hold the mind of man captive against the knowledge of God -1Tim. 4:1
3. Operates on the doctrines of the devils -1Tim. 4:1
4. Rejects the counsels and ways of God-1Sam. 28:6-8
5. It is the satanic option that many choose in the world -2 Sam. 28:7
6. Operates through familiar and witchcraft spirits -2 Sam. 28:7
7. The seeking after it brings sorrow and sadness-2 Sam. 28:21
8. Its operation brings fear and troubled mind -1 Sam. 28:20
9. Sought after by those who have been rejected by God-1 Sam. 28:16
10. Sought after by those whose heaven have been closed-1 Sam. 28:6
11. Operates with the spirit of necromancy -1Sam. 28:13-14
12. Operates with subtlety - Acts 13:20
13. Operates mischievously -Acts 13:10
14. It is enmity to God - Acts 13:10
15. It denies the way of salvation (that comes only through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ, grace and mercy.
16. It is the enemy of whatever stands for righteousness - Acts 13:10
17. Perverts the right ways of the Lord - Acts 13:10
18. Can be merchandised and indeed is being merchandised even in our generation - Acts 8:18-19, 2 Tim. 3:3-5
19. Has ability to transform and exhibit seemly Godly anointing therefore, watch 2 Cor. 11:14-15
20. It is a deceiver of man - Matt. 21:8
21. Has the form but not the substance of true anointing - 2Tim. 3:5 warning: depart
22. Denies the divinity of Jesus Christ 23. Denies the trinity of God head 24. Denies the resurrection and the second coming of Jesus Christ.

HALLMARKS OF POSITIVE ANOINTING
1. It is likened to the rain of God that falls from heaven on His people- J o e l 2:23, Zech. 10:1
2. It is the perfect gift of God that comes from above for His glory-James 1:17
3. It brings healing to those who are oppressed by infirmities -James 5:14-15
4. Can be transferred by laying on of hand- Acts 13:1-3
5. It is never merchandised - Acts 8:19-20
6. It is divisible Num. 11:16-17,
7. It is not limited by space/distance Num. 11:2; Matt. 17:21
8. It is the free gift of the sovereign God unto his children and not purchased by man - Acts 8:20
9. It is empowers man to operates ministry and calling effectively and efficiently - Acts 3:12, 4:1-4, Acts 2:14-41
10. It empowers man for productive ministry
11. It has sweet fragrance
12. It advertises the glory of God - Acts 2:41, Acts 4:3 - not self-glory.
13. It has magnetic power
14. It has diversities of operation but same spirit -1Cor. 12:4
15. It is person specific - 1Sam. 16:6-134
16. Can be received through an anointed person - Moses and the seventy Elders
17. It makes the work of ministry easy - authority of ease or comforting authority. 18. To sets men apart for the work of ministry - Acts 13:2-4 -Paul and Barnabas.
19. It is the demonstration of the power of God that manifest in physical actions/activities - Acts 8:18
20. It is the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament who was poured upon all flesh on the day of Pentecost - Joel 2:28 29, Acts 2:1-4
21. It comes in the measure of grace upon a person - Eph. 4;7-8
22. It is given by God for the perfecting of the saints Eph. 4:11-12
23. It edifies the body of Christ- Eph. 4:12.
24. It empowers the kingly and priestly ministries of believers- Exo. 30:22-23
25. It relieves men of the burden on their shoulders Isa. 10:27
26. It breaks the yoke from the neck of men Isa. 10:27
27. It destroys devils yokes Isa. 10:27
28. It is pleasant and sweet experience Ps. 133:1-3
29. It can be stored or absorbed in:
-Cloth - Acts 19:12

-Saliva - John 9:6
-Water - John 9:7,11
-Mantle 1 King 19:19, 2 Kings 2:8

-Bones of anointed 2 Kings 13:21

-Shadow of the anointed - Acts 5:15

MEASURES OF ANOINTING
1. It is measurable - Eph. 4:7
2. All believers have a level of anointing within them at salvation 1 John 2:27, John 4:14
3. There is double portion of anointing 2 King 2:9 - Elisha had double portion of the anointing of Elijah.
4. It can be without measure - John 3:24
a. Ankle level: Is at the baptism of the Holy Spirit - Eze. 47:3- 4 (It is the introduction to the realm of power) - Acts 1:8, John 7:38
b. Loin level anointing: Eze. 47:4 -(It is the exceeding great power realm) - Eph. 1:18-20, - it is the self quickening powers.
c. Immeasurable level: This is the overflowing auction - it is the anointing without measure and that is the level on w h i c h t h e L o r d J e s u s C h r i s t o p e r a t e d i n H i s e a r t h l y m i n i s t r y . T h a t i s w h e r e o u r outermost goal should be - Heb. 6:1-5.
It is the level where a believer begins to experience heaven on earth - so that whatever is not permitted/obtainable is heaven does not happen around him. Nothing is impossible to him. Oppositions are crushed in his wake, demons are tormented by his look alone just as it was with Jesus Christ during His earthly ministry - John 14:12, Matt. 8:28-29.
CONCLUSION: All believers are enjoined to go back to the practical apostolic era. Ask yourself, what was in the life of apostle Paul that make him to discern the evil anointing in the life of Elymas the sorcerers - Acts 13:8-9 or the characters of the spirit that were operating in the life of the damsel in Act 16:18- Spirit of divination and soothsaying. It was the apostolic anointing of the early church that came upon them as a result of their commitment to continual praying, ministry of the Word (Acts 6:4) and fasting.
