       THE ANOINTING OF THE OLD TESTAMENT 

MEMORY VERSE
 “Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him .....and the spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward.....” 1 Sam. 16:13.

INTRODUCTION: In the Old Testament (OT), the heavenly Prescribed “Holy anointing Oil” that God commanded his ministers to use; are meant to “sanctify”, “Hallow”, “Consecrate” and make “most Holy” any material on which it is applied. But, if that Holy anointing oil is divinely instructed to be poured on any divinely selected person, it is meant to set such an individual into an “heavenly ordained” office for him to powerfully function in that assignment. It takes the anointing of the LORD for anyone to live a Supernatural life and to carry out any effective ministry in life. In the Old Testament (OT), both living Human beings and non-living thingswere anointed for diver's specific divine purposes. To study this topic on “The Anointing in the Old Testament”, we'll be looking at the following Sub-topics:

 a. Non-living things

2. CONTENTS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT ANOINTING-Ex. 30:22-25; Prov.7:17; S.S. 4:12-15

i. Myrrh - It's an aromatic gum resin obtained from a shrubby tree. The taste is bitter and it acts as an antiseptic and a stimulant.
 - In Ps. 45:8-It was used as a perfume
 - In Esth. 2:12 - It was used for women purification.
 - In Jn. 19:39 - It was used for Embalming (Gen. 50:2)

 Implication: Anointing is a
1. Magnetic force of blessings - Ps. 45:8-12
2. Healing power for all diseases - Matt. 4:23-25
3. Agent of disgrace to all sicknesses - Jas. 5:14, 15
 4. Drawer of people & good things to you - Lk. 5:17
 5. Life preservation power is in it - Jn. 11:25, 26
6. The Bitter price to be paid for Anointing; Attacks, Suffering,
Trials & Temptations; - Lk. 4:1-14

 ii. Sweet Cinnamon - It's an aromatic spice prepared from the dried inner bark of an aromatic tree (Ex. 30:23; Prov. 7:17) - It's used for flavouring due to its pleasant smell and sweet fragrance. It's also used to silence bad odours of animals that are brought into the Tabernacles.

Implications: In the Anointing, It is a
 - Killer of all evil forces in your life
- Destroyer of offensive powers delegated to you
 - Source of “sweetness”-eg. “Sweet sleep” - Prov.3:24
 - An heavenly flavour mixed with your life to make you a magnetic force to reckon with

iii. Sweet Calamus - It is the scented leaves that grows in an hostile environment. It is used medicinally and to make fragrances. For it to bring out its sweet smell, it must be beaten; so the harder the beating, the greater the release of its sweet smell.

 Implication: - Your sweetness in life - (ice. greatness, promotion & breakthroughs) is hidden in the overcoming power of “hostile trials” of life- to release Heavenly oil on you - (Ps. 23:5; Ps. 110:2; Ps.75:6, 7).
- Subjection to the wilderness life (Hard beating) by the Holy Spirit (Lk. 4:1-14). The greater the heat of life, the greater your fragrance (fame) - (1 Pet. 5:10).

iv. Cassia - It is a flowering plants that only grows at an height above 8,000ft ie. You must get to the mountain to get cassia. Implications: - It takes a mountain top life to be anointed & to maintain the anointing from the Almighty God.
 v. Olive Oil - It's from the olive tree. Olive leaf (Gen.8:11) was the 1st signal of restored life to the earth after the flood destructions in the days of Noah, it was brought by a dove (symbol of the Holy Spirit). Implication: Anointing is the power of life - through the Holy Spirit for total restoration.

3. CATEGORIES OF THE OLD TESTAMENT ANOINTING-Eze. 47:1-5; Joel 3:18; Jn. 7:37-39; Rev. 22:1
 i. The Ankles Level Anointing: (Eze. 47:3)
 - Level of the babies in the Lord - 1Jn. 2:18-20, 27-29
- Level of Baptism of the Holy Spirit - Acts 1:8
- Level that stronger believers must lift up new converts in the fait- Acts 3:7
 - Foundational level of power - Heb. 6:1-5

ii. The knees Level Anointing: (Eze. 47:4a).
 - Level of power to destroy internal idols - Rom.11:4
 - Level of power to pray heaven down - Acts 21:5
 - Level of power to rule among men, in the midst of your enemies - Gen.41:43; Ps.110:2
- The realm of powerful “spirit” worship - Dan.6:10; Jn. 4:23, 24; 2Chr. 6:13

iii. The Loins Level Anointing: (Eze. 47:4b)
 - The level of power with fire - Matt. 3:11; Lk. 3:16
 - Anointing level of “Heavenly Speed” - 1Kings 18:46
- Level of production of Kingdom ruler - Gen. 35:11
 - Level of destructions of satanic rulers in order to open doors to strange wealth. - Isa. 45:1-3

iv. The Risen Level Anointing: (Eze. 47:5)
 - Level of the power of resurrection - Phil. 3:10
 - Level of the “Christ's over flowing anointing” - Jn. 14:12
- Level of the Anointing without measure - Jn. 3:34; 1:16
- Level of “Nothing is impossible” - Matt.17:20, Mk.9:23

 ii. Righteousness - (2Kg.23:24, 25; 2Chr.24:2; Judg.16:1-5, 18-21)

iv. Service - (Gen.40:4-13; Ex.33:11; 40:13-15; Ps.89:20)

CONCLUSION: Insights into the “contents” and the “categories” of Anointing in the Old Testament is an eye opener for everyone that wants to go far with God in the realm of power. We must embrace “obedience and Holiness” as Priests (1Pet.2:9) to successfully operate with “power and authority” as Kings in this world (Rev.1:6; 5:10) so as to partake in the first resurrection (Rev.20:6).
