President Buhari orders decongestion of Prisons
The commander in Chief of the armed force has directed all state governors to decongestion prisons across the Country,Mallam El-Rufai Kaduna state Governor on a visit to kaduna Prison said the president directive was to make sure that numbers of Prison inmates is reduce to the barest minimum
El-Rufai said, “Our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, has directed all governors to visit prisons and ensure that we reduce to the barest minimum those that have spent many years awaiting trial in our courts.
“It is injustice for a person to be kept for a long time in the name of awaiting trial. This is why President Buhari directed all governors to undertake such visits so that, working together with the Ministry of Justices and the Prison authorities, we’ll ensure we do something about it.”
He said that those imprisoned wrongly and awaiting trial get justice.
The comptroller of Prisons Abubakar Garba,who received the governor noted that the prison that was built 1915 with a capacity of 547,is now housing over 1000 inmates.
He begged the governor to commute 11 death row inmate who are from Kaduna sentence to life imprisonment,the state prison has 114 condemned inmates.
