Court Acquits Child Bride of Murder

                    

A high Court in Gezawa near Kano finally acquitted yesterday Wasila Tasiu a child bride who killed a husband with rat poison.
She was 14 years old when she committed the offence,she was charge with Culpable homicide for deliberately adding rat poison to her husband's meal Umar Sani,Umar 35, and four others died within hours of eating the meal last April.

Human right activist used the case as a pointer to issues of child marriage,but the Wasila family insisted she was not forced into marriage, that 14 years was the standard marrying  age recommended for the region.
Her lawyer Hussaina Aliyu has applied for the case to be dismissed due to the inability of the prosecution to prove it case,the prosecutor applied for murder charge to be withdrawn on May 20th but the case was adjoined pending the agreement of the kano state Attorney General to release her.

“I have no alternative than to pronounce according to law that the application of “nolle prosequi” (unwilling to pursue) is hereby granted,” he told the court,“In consequence, therefore, you, Wasila Tasi’u, are hereby discharged.” Justice Mohammed Yahaya told the Court
