Minimum of Ten girls are raped daily in Rivers State

    

Rivers State Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Joe Poroma disclosed that not less than 10 girls are raped daily in the state. he disclosed this during his testimony before the River State Commission of Inquiry into politically motivated killings and destruction of properties,before and during the 2015 elections.

He said “The statistics are very high, “Not less than 10 girls are raped every day in the state mostly by gangs and militants.”
“Usually, they don’t report to the police or their parents for fear of victimisation,” he said.
“My hope is that there is a need for us to arrest the situation whereby police will do what they are supposed to do,” 

He said his ministry is collaborating with Doctors without border to provide the necessary medical care to rape victims,he attributed the rape cases to high crime rate but not a politically motivated one.
